❓ Common questions.
The most-asked questions about Hummer restoration at Chapman Mobil. Anything else? Drop us a message.
Q1Do you really restore all three Hummer models — H1, H2, and H3?
Yes. We have the tooling, diagnostic equipment, and experience to fully restore H1 (1992–2006), H2 (2003–2009), and H3 (2005–2010). Each model has its own quirks — portal axles and CTIS on H1, air suspension and BorgWarner 4480 on H2, frame rust and 5.3L Alpha on H3 — and we handle all of them in-house at our Orange, CA facility.
Q2How much does a Hummer restoration cost?
Pricing depends entirely on the truck and the scope of work. A mechanical-and-cosmetic refresh sits at the entry end. A full ground-up rebuild — engine, paint, interior, electrical — sits in the middle. Concours / show builds with engine conversions and bespoke interiors are quoted individually. The consultation is free and ends with a written line-item estimate, so you know the exact number before any work begins.
Q3How long does a Hummer restoration take?
A Phase 1 refresh takes 1–3 weeks. A full Phase 2 restoration usually runs 8–16 weeks depending on parts lead time. Frame-off concours builds can take 4–9 months. We give a realistic timeline with the written quote and send weekly photo updates every Friday so you always know exactly where your build stands.
Q4Can I do the restoration in stages to spread the cost?
Yes — many of our customers do exactly that. Phase 1 (refresh) → Phase 2 (mechanical & paint) → Phase 3 (concours / upgrades). We write the scope so each phase stands on its own, with no compromise on quality if you pause between phases. There is no penalty or relock fee to come back later.
Q5Do you source OEM Hummer parts?
Yes. AM General OEM parts are our first choice when available. We also source NOS (new old stock) for hard-to-find H1 components and discontinued trim. When OEM is unavailable, we use vetted aftermarket brands we have tested on real builds — never the cheapest option. Custom one-off parts are fabricated in-house. Every part is quoted in writing before purchase.
Q6What warranty do you offer on Hummer restoration work?
All mechanical labor is backed by our up to 4-year / 48,000 km labor warranty. Paint and body are covered by the manufacturer warranty of the materials used (typically 3–5 years against defect). Engine rebuild work is covered for up to 4 years on labor with parts warranted by the supplier. If anything fails within warranty we fix it — no paperwork, no argument.
Q7I live in another state. Can I still use Chapman for my Hummer restoration?
Yes — about 30% of our restoration customers are out-of-state. We arrange insured, enclosed-trailer transport from anywhere in the lower 48 (or air freight for Alaska / Hawaii). You receive weekly photo updates throughout the build, video walkarounds at key milestones, and we coordinate delivery back to you on the agreed date. Many customers fly in for the final delivery.
Q8Where is my Hummer stored during the build?
Inside our secure, climate-controlled bay. Dehumidified to prevent further corrosion, monitored 24/7, fully insured, and never moved or driven outside the documented scope. Your truck sleeps indoors from the day we receive it to the day it goes home.
Q9Do you offer payment plans for the restoration?
Yes. Phase-based payments are the most common — you pay per phase as work is completed, not all up front. For larger Phase 3 builds we typically structure four milestone payments: deposit at intake, teardown complete, paint & body complete, final delivery. We can also work with collector-car financing partners on request.
Q10Are you authorized by AM General?
We are an independent specialist shop — not a factory dealer. We source AM General OEM parts directly through authorized distributors. Our work meets and often exceeds factory tolerances, and many of our master mechanics have been working on Hummers since the original civilian H1 launched in 1992.
Q11Will my Hummer be insured while it's in your shop?
Yes. Every vehicle in our care is covered by our garage-keepers liability insurance throughout the entire build, including paint booth, road testing, and transport between facilities. You can request a certificate of insurance for your own records.
Q12Can I add custom touches — wheels, lift, interior, off-road armor?
Absolutely. Most Phase 2 and 3 builds include personalization. We have working relationships with Recaro, Sparco, BFGoodrich, Method, ICON, and other trusted brands. Custom interiors, bespoke leather, performance suspension, off-road armor, audio, and trim packages are all available — quoted as add-ons to the base phase pricing.
